Description:
Vitamin A aldehyde, also called retinal, is the closest component to A acid. It is produced by the oxidative cleavage of β-carotene. Reduction to obtain retinol, oxidation to obtain retinoic acid. Retinaldehyde is a visual pigment composed of 11-cis retinal and opsin in rhodopsin visual cells. After 11-cis retinal absorbs light, it is replaced by all-trans retinal, which makes the conformation of rhodopsin occur. The change initiates the nerve impulse to the brain, thus forming vision.
Usage:
Corotenoid component of the visual pigments. All-trans retinal is converted to retinoic acid in vivo by the action of retinal dehydrogenase.
